About this tour

Côn Đảo’s natural beauty is matched by the weight of its history. Once the site of some of Vietnam’s most notorious colonial prisons, the island today invites visitors to learn about the sacrifice of those imprisoned here and to pay their respects. This half-day tour covers the most important sites with an English-speaking guide who brings the stories to life.

Itinerary

8:00 AM – Pickup from your Con Dao hotel.

The Lord Building (Dinh Chúa Đảo) – Once the residence and administrative office of the island's colonial governors, now a small museum tracing Con Dao's history from the French era through modern Vietnam.

Phú Hải Prison – Built in 1862, the oldest and largest prison on the island. At its peak, over 200 prisoners were held in a single building under brutal conditions.

French Tiger Cages – Notorious isolation cells hidden from public view until exposed to the world in 1970. A powerful reminder of the suffering of political prisoners.

American Tiger Cages – Built in 1971, small damp cells designed for physical and psychological confinement. Despite the conditions, prisoners here continued to resist.

Separated Shed – Originally a livestock shed, later used as a punishment area for prisoners under unsanitary conditions.

Hàng Dương Cemetery – The resting place of thousands of Vietnamese prisoners who lost their lives on the island. A sacred and peaceful site for remembrance.

Lady Phi Yến Temple – A small temple dedicated to the wife of Emperor Gia Long, exiled to Con Dao for opposing foreign alliances. An important cultural and spiritual site.

Tour concludes with lunch (or dinner). Return to your hotel by approximately 12:00 noon.
