Three days moving slowly through two of the Mekong Delta’s most authentic provinces. Ben Tre is coconut country — canals lined with water palms, prawn fishermen working the channels, and workshops turning the nut into candy and chocolate. Tra Vinh is different: a province shaped by its large Khmer population, with over 140 ancient pagodas, quiet village lanes, and the famous wax coconut — a unique green variety first cultivated here, with a gelatinous flesh unlike anything sold in the markets. Day three ends at Con Ho Islet, a hidden river island where traditional Mekong life is preserved intact. Countryside riding by bicycle or motorbike included on Day 2.
Depart at 7:00 AM. Travel to Ben Tre and cruise the Mekong River by private boat. Pick mangrove fruit from the banks, join local fishermen hauling prawn nets, and eat the catch freshly cooked on board. Visit a traditional coconut candy factory and an artisan chocolate workshop, then paddle through peaceful back canals by sampan. Lunch at a tropical fruit garden or on the boat. Continue to Tra Vinh and check in to a local private homestay. Evening Vietnamese cooking class with your hosts, followed by a home-cooked dinner featuring Tra Vinh specialties.
Meal: Lunch; Dinner at private homestay (cooking class).
Overnight: Local lodge, Tra Vinh.
After breakfast, explore the Tra Vinh countryside by bicycle or motorbike through quiet village lanes, rice fields, and coconut gardens. Meet families and learn about daily life in a province that has changed little in decades. Visit an ancient Khmer pagoda — Tra Vinh has more Khmer temples per square kilometre than any province in Vietnam, some over a thousand years old, shaded by enormous sala trees. Continue to taste the famous Tra Vinh wax coconut — a rare green variety with firm, gelatinous flesh and a mellow sweetness, and visit the farm where it was first cultivated. Lunch at the private homestay. Afternoon free to relax in a hammock or explore the village at your own pace. Dinner at the lodge.
