Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay map

Ha Long Bay is Vietnam's most iconic natural landmark — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 1,600 limestone karsts rising from emerald water. It's the classic choice: well-connected, wide range of cruise tiers (budget to ultra-luxury), and the most dramatic scenery. The trade-off is popularity: peak season brings more boats on the water.

Lan Ha Bay sits just south of Ha Long, connected by a narrow strait but administered through Cat Ba Island. It has the same limestone scenery with far fewer visitors, cleaner water, and more authentic floating villages. Most travellers who've done both rate it higher for the overall experience. The gap in crowd levels is significant.

Bai Tu Long Bay is the least visited of the three — wilder, more remote, and best for travellers who want Ha Long's geology without any of the tourist infrastructure. Cruise options are fewer but the sense of isolation is genuine.

In short: first timer or want iconic views → Ha Long. Want quieter water and a better overall experience → Lan Ha. Want to get off the beaten track entirely → Bai Tu Long.
